Illiniza Sur Summit 5250m (1N-2D)
The Illinizas are a pair of volcanic mountains that are located to the south of Quito, Ecuador. They are located in the Illinizas Ecological Reserve, These twin mountains are separated by a saddle that is about a kilometer long. The peaks are among the highest in Ecuador, with Illiniza Sur standing slightly taller than Illiniza Norte, its northern counterpart, at 5248 m and 5126 m respectively.
Illiniza Sur (the southern peak) is a more difficult climb due to its glacial nature.
Illiniza Sur is a more technical mountain for people that have ice climbing knowledge. It’s an alpine climb so it’s only recommend to experienced climbers and be acclimatized to altitude
Early Afternoon, we head to La Virgen Parking Lot and Hike to the Nuevos Horizontes Refuge. Rest and eat early dinner.
Day2: At 4am start the journey to the summit (3-6hours).Reach the summit and head back to Quito after lunch
